What is SEPA and how does it affect me?

Find out more about the new SEPA payment system
and how it affects you.

What is SEPA?

SEPA means Single Euro Payments Area. It is a regulation that aims to ensure that international payments and collections made in euros within EU countries are subject to the same conditions as domestic payments in terms of speed, simplicity and cost. The Single Euro Payments Area is comprised of the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Monaco.

How does it affect you?

With the coming into effect of SEPA from February 1st 2014, the current account numbering system will be converted to the international format known as IBAN (International Bank Account Number). This simply involves adding some initial data automatically to the 20 digits of your current account (c.c.c.)

Note: Since each country has different bank account systems, the length of the IBAN, which can be up to 34 characters, may vary from one country to another. It may also contain alphanumeric characters (numbers and letters). Additionally, to make transfers outside Spain, you will still need a BIC (bank identification code), as is currently the case. There are no changes in this respect.

How to know your IBAN

You can know your IBAN on the Internet by checking the movements of your account: go to "My Accounts" and select "Query". You can also know your IBAN by looking at your monthly statement (the IBAN account number is shown in the section called "Details of your contract holdings"), or by asking in your local Deutsche Bank branch

What should I do if I make transfers or Direct Debit payments?

In the case of transfer remittances:

Domestic transfers that you make in CSB34 format must be replaced either with the XML format or the CSB34-14 format. Deutsche Bank recommends that you switch to the XML format, as the CSB34-14 format is only valid temporarily until 2016.

Direct Debit remittances should be replaced with SEPA Direct Debits. There are two possible schemes:

  • The basic scheme intended for businesses and individuals, which operates in a similar way to the existing Direct Debit payments. In this case, remittances must be issued in XML or CSB19-14 file format.
  • The B2B (business to business) scheme intended exclusively for companies and sole traders, which has significantly lower repayment terms than the current scheme. In this case, remittances must be issued in XML or CSB19-44 format.
In both cases, Deutsche Bank recommends that you switch to the XML format, as both the CSB19-14 and CSB19-44 formats will cease to be valid in 2016.

If the transfer remittance files generated by you do not meet the above-mentioned specifications, we will process them with a view to executing them in accordance with the migration rules laid down by the Spanish Banking Association (AEB).

What should I check before signing a Direct Debit order (SEPA mandate)?

  • The basic scheme allows you to return the Direct Debit payment within the same period of time and on the same terms as a domestic payment.
  • However, under the B2B scheme (business to business) you waive your right to repayment. Once the payment has been debited from your account, you will not be able to ask for a refund. Therefore, we recommend caution with regard to this payment scheme. For your protection, Deutsche Bank will always check that you have accepted the Direct Debit order before debiting the money from your account. Therefore, it is important that you hand it in to your branch.
